2027 Primaries Was A Charade – IPAC
Political parties in Nigeria have criticised the primaries conducted ahead of the 2027 general election, describing the process as flawed and poorly implemented during a review held in Abuja.
The position was made public by the Inter-Party Advisory Council during a meeting with the Independent National Electoral Commission, where party leaders assessed the outcome of the nomination exercises.
They said the system used for selecting candidates exposed several weaknesses in the electoral framework.
According to the council, restrictions in the Electoral Act 2026 limited parties to direct primaries or consensus arrangements, which created tension within parties and led to disputes among aspirants.
It added that the cost and organisation of direct primaries placed heavy pressure on many political groups.
The council called for a review of the law to allow parties more flexibility in choosing candidates and urged political actors to avoid violence and internal manipulation, warning that unresolved issues could affect preparations for upcoming elections.
