The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) has cautioned that over 33 million people may suffer severe hunger and malnutrition in 2026 if urgent interventions are not implemented.
Dr Abubakar Kende, Secretary-General of the society, made the statement on Friday in Abuja during the unveiling of its Nutrition Advocacy Plan.
The event also celebrated Ambassador Layla Ali Othman as the society’s Nutrition Ambassador.
Kende expressed appreciation that the issues of hunger and malnutrition could be alleviated through the support of philanthropists like Othman. He said the Red Cross looks forward to Othman becoming the face of its Anti-Hunger and Malnutrition campaign.
He noted that the plan lays the foundation for effective action against hunger and malnutrition in Nigeria.
“The society hopes to make a significant impact in the fight against hunger and malnutrition with the help of its nutrition ambassador and other stakeholders,” he said.
Othman expressed her gratitude to the society for the honour.
