ADC Candidates, Obidients Rejects Abuja Poll Results
The African Democratic Congress candidate in the Abuja Municipal Area Council election, Dr Moses Paul, has rejected the outcome of the February 21 chairmanship poll, saying the results announced by the electoral body do not reflect the will of voters.
The Obidient Movement also dismissed the process, calling it a serious blow to democracy in the capital.
The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Christopher Maikalangu of the All Progressives Congress winner after he secured 40,295 votes out of 62,861 valid ballots.
Paul came second with 12,109 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party candidate polled 3,398 votes.
In a statement issued in Abuja, Paul accused INEC of mishandling the exercise.
He alleged voter suppression, manipulation of results, intimidation of party supporters and vote buying in several wards.
He maintained that his movement had earned the people’s mandate and said the conduct of some actors weakened trust in the process.
Speaking separately, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Yunusa Tanko, backed Paul’s position.
He alleged irregularities, harassment of party agents and poor communication over polling unit changes, which he said discouraged voters.
Efforts to get a response from the APC spokesman were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
