The civil society group Citizens for Secure Nation (CSN) has accused the African Democratic Congress (ADC) of taking advantage of recent school attacks in Kebbi and Niger states to score political points.
Following the federal government’s decision to close 44 unity colleges amid rising school kidnappings, the ADC criticised the move. However, CSN president Musa Maikawa, speaking from Kaduna, said the opposition party was using national security fears to manipulate public sentiment rather than offer constructive solutions.
Maikawa claimed the ADC’s comments were designed to undermine confidence in current security efforts. “We cannot allow a political party to weaponise the pain of grieving families for narrow advantage,” he said.
He warned that the party’s unproven allegations threatened to weaken trust in security agencies working to curb the violence. “There is no justification for painting security forces as collaborators with terrorists. Such rhetoric is dangerous and fuels suspicion at a time when public cooperation is essential,” the statement added.
Maikawa explained that the temporary school closures were precautionary measures based on security evaluations to safeguard students. He called on politicians to exercise restraint and responsibility when discussing national security, emphasising that unity and credible communication are vital in fighting violent groups.
