Akpabio Mocks Labour Party Strength
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has criticised the Labour Party, saying the opposition group is weakened by internal divisions and no longer commands strong electoral support.
He made the remarks in Uyo during a reception organised by the Akwa Ibom State Government for First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.
The event also featured the unveiling of the Akwa Ibom Senior Citizens Centre named in her honour and activities marking the 2026 International Women’s Day at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
Addressing the gathering, Akpabio said many opposition parties are struggling with leadership disputes and poor organisation ahead of the next general elections.
He suggested that the ruling All Progressives Congress is already strengthening its nationwide structure while rival parties remain distracted by internal problems.
He also pointed to the Labour Party’s leadership disagreements across different regions, claiming the conflicts have weakened the party’s influence.
The Senate President further criticised the Peoples Democratic Party, saying the party is dealing with leadership confusion and multiple claims to key offices.
Akpabio also reacted to threats by some opposition figures to boycott elections over the amended Electoral Act, arguing that such statements reflect a lack of readiness for the next polls rather than genuine protest.
