Dangote is trending because Aliko Dangote has submitted a lengthy proposal to build Nigeria’s largest sea port in Olokola, Ogun State. Years after Amosun saga.
The billionaire said he’s expanding into maritime logistics, not for himself.
But because he needs to show other entrepreneurs that it is possible, so they can join in building the country as well.
The port will be situated about 100km from the 650,000 BpD, oil refinery and fertilizer plant, about 1hr drive.
Hence, it would facilitate easier export of fertilizer, petrochemicals, and liquefied natural gas, and enhance import experience of raw materials and equipments.
Initially, Dangote was meant to build both the fertilizer plant and oil refinery in Olokola.
But agreements fell through with the former Ogun government, under Ibikunle Amosun who demolished his constructions at the Olokola FTZ, claiming he had no approval.
Amosun also allegedly terminated a 2001 agreement with a Chinese company to develop the FTZ.
Ogun was dragged in court in US and Europe, the court ruled in favour of the Chinese company, Zhongshan, awarded them $74M. — this was the case where two of Nigeria’s Presidential Jets were seized last year.
So, Dangote had to move his cement plant, fertilizer, and oil refinery to Lagos State.
Now that Dapo Abiodun has sorted the issues and opened up Ogun State for business., he’s back.
Ogun locals with PTSD from previous broken down talks, are urging Dangote to conclude approvals before Dapo Abiodun leaves office.
Meanwhile, others are wondering why he continues to invest in the South West.
