APC Defends Wike Over FCT Poll Move
The All Progressives Congress has defended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, saying he is free to campaign for any candidate of his choice.
The party spoke on Monday amid debate over Wike’s support for APC contenders in the February 21 Area Council elections in Abuja.
APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, said Wike’s actions fall within his rights as a Nigerian citizen.
He maintained that the constitution allows every citizen to back any candidate or political party without restriction.
The defence follows criticism from the Peoples Democratic Party after two of its chairmanship candidates in Bwari and Abuja Municipal Area Council stepped down and endorsed APC rivals.
The PDP leadership described the move as improper and against party principles.
The controversy comes after the APC secured five out of the six area councils in the FCT polls.
President Bola Tinubu later praised Wike’s contribution to the party’s success, adding to ongoing discussions about loyalty and shifting alliances within Nigeria’s political space.
