Bayelsa Deputy Governor Burial Trip Takes Deadly Turn
Several passengers are feared dead after a bus conveying mourners to the burial of Bayelsa State’s late Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, crashed along the Toru-Orua stretch of the Sagbama–Ekeremor Road in Bayelsa State.
The accident involved an 18-seater commercial bus travelling on a busy route in the area, with early reports indicating that more than 10 people lost their lives. Others on board sustained injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care.
The victims were on their way to Ofoni in Sagbama Local Government Area for the burial of Ewhrudjakpo, who died suddenly on December 11, 2025.
He was 60 and reportedly collapsed while at his office in the Government House, Yenagoa.
His funeral, scheduled for January 30, 2026, followed days of ceremonies, including a tribute event attended by former President Goodluck Jonathan, Governor Douye Diri, and former Governor Seriake Dickson.
The crash has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a moment of remembrance and closure.
