Bomb Scare At Aba Church
A suspected explosive device caused panic at a church in Aba, Abia State, after it was discovered within the premises of the United Evangelical Church in the Ogbor Hill area.
The object was found during routine construction work, forcing an emergency security response.
The discovery was made when church members began removing an old perimeter fence to allow for a road expansion project by the state government.
While digging the foundation for a new fence near the parsonage, workers struck a large metal object buried underground and moved it closer to a borehole, unaware of the danger.
Concern grew when the priest noticed the object and ordered everyone to leave the area immediately.
He alerted security authorities, leading to the deployment of soldiers who swiftly evacuated the suspected device, averting what residents described as a potential disaster in the busy neighbourhood.
Residents, traders and worshippers later expressed relief, noting that the area is usually crowded and the outcome could have been tragic.
Church officials confirmed the incident but said full details were still unclear, while attempts to get an official response from the army were unsuccessful.
