Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing ongoing internal conflicts and leadership disputes within the party.
The governor’s resignation was announced on Friday by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa. Yusuf submitted a formal letter of resignation to the NNPP Chairman in Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area, effective January 25, 2026.
In his letter, Yusuf expressed gratitude to the party for providing him a political platform and for the support he received from party leaders and members across Kano State since 2022.
However, he pointed to unresolved leadership disagreements and prolonged legal battles as key reasons for his decision. “The party has recently faced persistent internal challenges arising from leadership disputes and ongoing legal matters, many of which are currently before the courts,” he said.
The governor added that these conflicts have caused growing disenfranchisement among members, widening divisions, and creating uncertainty at both state and national levels.
“After careful consideration, and without prejudice to the party’s ability to resolve its internal issues, I have concluded that resigning is in the best interest of the people of Kano State,” Yusuf stated, emphasizing that his decision was made in good faith and without bitterness.
He reiterated his commitment to peace, unity, and the development of Kano State, even as he leaves the party.
