Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has rewarded Jeremiah Obaji with ₦10 million after he walked 633 kilometers from Lagos to Abakaliki in solidarity with the governor’s peace initiatives.

Obaji, a 37-year-old businessman, set out on August 22 to honor Nwifuru’s role in resolving the prolonged conflict between Effium and Ezza-Effium communities in Ohaukwu LGA, which has lingered since 2021.

The trek lasted 17 days, with Obaji journeying by day and resting in villages at night, carrying only two shirts and a single pair of shoes. He arrived in Abakaliki on Sunday morning to a rousing welcome from residents before meeting government officials.

Chief of Staff Emmanuel Echiegu, who received him on behalf of Governor Nwifuru, conveyed the governor’s commendation for his courage and commitment, before announcing the ₦10 million cash reward.

Explaining his motivation, Obaji said: “My community was in a serious crisis. Many lives were lost, and properties were destroyed. I trekked to Abakaliki to thank Governor Nwifuru for restoring peace.”

His media aide, Wisdom Nwedene, added that the enthusiastic reception Obaji received showed the value Ebonyians place on peace and on the governor’s leadership.
