Former President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 100% tariff on all movies produced outside the United States, claiming the move will protect the American film industry from foreign competition.

Speaking on Truth Social, Trump said:

"Our movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing ‘candy from a baby.

California with it’s weak and incompetent governor has been particularly hard hit. Therefore, in order to solve this long time, never ending problem, I will be imposing a 100% tariff on any and all movies that are made outside the United States.

Hollywood productions increasingly rely on international locations such as Canada, the UK, and Australia for tax incentives, financing, and local resources. Analysts warn that a 100% tariff could disrupt global production workflows, drive up costs for studios and audiences, and impact thousands of U.S. industry workers. Some labor groups, including the Teamsters, have expressed support, viewing the measure as a way to create more domestic film jobs.

The proposed tariff is part of a wider set of trade measures Trump has announced, including duties on imported furniture, branded drugs, heavy trucks, kitchen cabinets, and vanities.
