Nigeria’s U-20 team, the Flying Eagles, were eliminated from the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Santiago, Chile, following a heavy 4-0 defeat to Argentina in the Round of 16.
Argentina took an early lead in the 2nd minute through Alejo Sarco, immediately putting Nigeria on the back foot. Maher Carrizo added a second goal in the 35th minute, sending the Albiceleste into halftime with a 2-0 advantage. Argentina maintained control in the second half, scoring two more goals to complete a dominant 4-0 win.
The Flying Eagles had advanced to the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams, following a draw against Colombia and victories over Saudi Arabia and Italy in the group stage. However, they struggled to cope with Argentina’s pace, organization, and attacking intensity.
Despite the defeat, Nigeria’s campaign showcased the talent and potential of its young players. The experience gained will be valuable as the team looks ahead to future international tournaments.
