A massive fire broke out on Tuesday evening at the renowned Alaba International Market in Lagos, razing several shops and sending traders into chaos.
In a live TikTok stream by user KB Clothings, thick plumes of smoke were seen billowing from different sections of the market as traders screamed in distress. Some were seen sobbing uncontrollably over the destruction of their goods, while others risked their safety trying to salvage what they could before the flames consumed nearby shops.
Firefighters from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service battled to contain the inferno, but as of press time, the blaze was still spreading across parts of the market. Eyewitnesses captured scenes of confusion and desperation, with many accusing market security of reacting too late to the emergency.
Located along the Lagos-Badagry expressway, Alaba International Market is one of Nigeria’s busiest commercial centers, known for its vast network of electronics, building materials, and household goods traders from across West Africa.
