The Kano Hisbah Board has called off the planned wedding between TikTok stars Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda.
A magistrate court had previously directed the board to supervise the marriage within 60 days, warning that failure to comply would be considered contempt. The order followed the arrest of the TikTokers by the Kano State Censorship Board after videos of them, described as “immoral and demeaning,” went viral on social media.
The videos, which showed Wushirya shirtless and displaying affection toward Yar Guda, were deemed to violate state laws prohibiting sexually suggestive and obscene content.
Abba Sufi, director-general of Hisbah, said the board discovered that Wushirya only agreed to the marriage to avoid legal prosecution, not out of genuine love. After this finding, the board canceled the wedding and referred the matter back to the court for further action.
“Mai Wushirya admitted he lied to the court, claiming he and Yar Guda were in love to escape prosecution,” Sufi said. “The wedding has been canceled, and the case has been referred back to the judge for appropriate measures.”
The court’s initial order mandating the marriage drew widespread criticism, with many describing it as a violation of personal freedom. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) condemned the directive as “unconstitutional,” emphasizing that marriage is a voluntary union that cannot be forced by the state.
