The Lagos State Government on Tuesday arrested 20 street beggars during enforcement operations in Ikosi Ketu and Mile 12.

State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the exercise is part of the government’s ongoing effort to maintain order and ensure public spaces are safe and properly used.

Wahab explained that KAI operatives carried out the operation along Ketu, Mile 12, Ikosi Road, and the 7UP corridor. “The sweep, which led to the arrest of twenty individuals engaged in street begging and related activities, is part of our continuous mop-up campaign to curb environmental violations, protect the public, and prevent activities that disrupt traffic and sanitation,” he stated on X.

He added that the arrested individuals have been handed over to relevant authorities for profiling and further action. Wahab also said the ministry will work with social welfare agencies to provide rehabilitation where necessary. “We will continue enforcing environmental laws across Lagos and urge the public to report locations where street begging persists. Our aim is to keep Lagos clean, orderly, and safe for everyone,” he said.

The operation follows earlier enforcement efforts, including a November sweep in Ikosi Ketu and Mile 12, where 15 street beggars were arrested.
