David Effiong, an indigene of Akwa Ibom State, has been arrested by the state police for allegedly causing a public disturbance while dressed in full masquerade attire, defying a current ban on such activities.

The arrest followed reports from residents on Tuesday that a masquerader was creating chaos and damaging property in the community.

The move is part of a stricter enforcement of Governor Pastor Umo Eno’s statewide ban on public masquerade displays, which was imposed to curb violence, intimidation, and destruction of property linked to masqueraders.

Commissioner of Police Baba Azare confirmed Effiong’s arrest and stated that he would face charges in court.

Governor Eno had previously warned that anyone caught violating the ban would be arrested and prosecuted. “Masquerades have been used to terrorize communities, and this must stop,” he said.

He added, “As Chief Security Officer of the state, I direct the Commissioner of Police and all security agencies to enforce this ban fully. Public safety and peace must be maintained, and all masquerade activities are hereby prohibited statewide.”
