#justiceforRuth is trending because again, a Dangote truck fatally crushed a student, Ruth Otabor at Auchi poly gate. Nigerian police tried to cover the case, Dangote company ignored them.
Ruth who’s now a leg short, is the younger sister to BBNaija’s Phyna.
She graduated last week Wednesday, but the school insisted they did a National Skill Acquisition Program.
As she went to register for it, on her way out, trying to get a bike, the dangote truck driver perphaps intoxicated, drove recklessly and crushed her and the bikeman. Yet, continued driving like nothing happened. Essentially fleeing.
Seeing it was a dangote truck and they are notorious for such accidents, people were reluctant to go after him, until one lecturer did. He chased the truck, caught up with him and apprehended the driver, who still tried running away on foot.
Took him and the truck to police. Later, police didn’t allow anyone snap or record the truck in their station. Then discreetly removed the plate number, trying to de-dangotize the truck.
Then, Phyna escalated it to VeryDarkMan.
However, unfortunately for Ruth, she was rushed to a hospital, seeing how badly she was hit, they had to immediately amputate her right leg to save her.
She suffered a broken head, broken pelvic, broke arms spine, a torn bladder, damaged ribs and multiple fractures. She can’t urinate or pass out feaces, they have to surgically remove waste from her.
The amputation wasn’t a partial one. It was the full right leg that was cut off from the pelvic.
The left leg too is only hanging on probability. If her condition worsen, they’d have to remove the second leg.
They reached out to Dangote Company. — No response. The police kept saying a representative of Dangote would come.
The accident happened on Monday morning around 11am.
Yesterday Thursday, they charged the case to court. The driver pled guilty. When they asked for his ID, he had none. No ID card, no Drivers license. When he was asked to call his supervisors, they didn’t pick. — the case was adjourned till next Thursday.
According to Phyna, the drivers are paid per trip, which is ₦8k. So they drive as quick and reckless as possible to meet up and make more money.
Now Ruth’s life is 50/50 or even lower. Her only chance of surviving is outside the country.
Fortunately, Dangote Group heard the calls, demand for justice and finally issued a statement, saying they have visited Ruth at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Edo State, met her husband, one alleged (Daniel) and wished her a speedy recovery.
But Nigerians do not seem okay with their response because, Dangote truck is notorious for numerous freak accidents across the country and most times the case went no where.
Phyna too isn’t pleased, as they used it as “content”.
There are several reports of Dangote truck tragedy across the country, and it is expected to increase as Dangote is about to launch 4,000 new trucks.
Phyna wants a lifetime compensation for her sister.
