Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced to more than 27 years in prison for attempting to overthrow the government, the country’s Supreme Federal Court (STF) announced.
A majority of the STF’s five-member chamber found the 70-year-old guilty, according to local reports.
Bolsonaro becomes the first former Brazilian president to be convicted for an attempted coup, following the January 8, 2023 incident when his supporters stormed the Brazilian Congress, Supreme Court, and presidential palace.
He did not appear in court during the proceedings.
Since early August, Bolsonaro has been under house arrest for breaching previous court orders.
The verdict, which was initially expected on Friday, was delivered earlier than scheduled.
