Samuel Umtiti has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31, closing the chapter on a career filled with both remarkable highs and difficult setbacks.

The French centre-back rose to prominence at Olympique Lyonnais before joining Barcelona, where he spent seven seasons and helped the club win two La Liga titles and three Copa del Rey trophies. Umtiti also achieved international glory with France, playing a key role in their 2018 FIFA World Cup triumph.

However, persistent knee injuries hampered much of his later career, often keeping him sidelined and ultimately leading to his decision to hang up his boots.

In an emotional farewell shared on social media, Umtiti reflected on his journey, writing: “After an intense career with ups and downs, the time has come to say goodbye… I gave my ALL with passion and regret NOTHING. I want to thank all the clubs, presidents, coaches and players I was able to stand with ❤️

Thank you @olympiquelyonnais
Thank you @fcbarcelona
Thank you @losclive
Thank you @uslecce
Thank you @equipedefrance

And thank you to all the supporters for your support ❤️”

Umtiti’s retirement marks the end of a memorable era for a player whose talent shone brightly, even as injuries curtailed what could have been an even greater career.
