The Catholic Diocese of Nsukka in Enugu State has announced the killing of Rev Fr Matthew Eya.
He was shot dead on Thursday night at Ishiogwu, along the Eha-Alumona–Eha-Ndiagu road in Nsukka Local Government Area.
In a statement, the Diocese’s Chancellor, Rev Fr Cajetan Iyidobi, described the incident as deeply painful and tragic, saying:
“Shocked to the marrow, it is with crushing pain and sorrow, yet a total submission to the will of the Almighty God and a firm hope in the resurrection of the dead, that I inform you of the tragic death of yet another brother of ours, Rev Fr Matthew Eya. He was shot dead yesterday, 19 September 2025, along the Eha-Alumona-Eha-Ndiagu road. Let us remain ardent in prayer that God sees us through this period of devastating anguish.”
That same night, suspected armed robbers attacked Ezimo in neighbouring Udenu LGA, killing a police officer on duty at the country home of Deputy Inspector General of Police and former Force PRO, Frank Mbah.
The Enugu State Police Command has not yet released an official statement on either incident.
