The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government of Nigeria over the alleged neglect of the nation’s university system.
The decision was announced following a National Executive Council meeting held on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at the University of Abuja. ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, disclosed the development in a copy of the strike notice he personally signed and shared with our correspondent in Abuja.
“At the National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Abuja, the Union decried the neglect of the University system and the government’s consistent refusal to heed its demands. ASUU has therefore given the Federal Government fourteen (14) days to address these issues. If the government fails to act within this period, the Union may have no option but to first embark on a two-week warning strike, followed by a total and indefinite strike,” the notice stated.
Earlier, the Federal Ministry of Education had set up a committee, led by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary Abel Enitan, to review ASUU’s proposals in a bid to ensure stability across universities. As of the time of filing this report, the committee has yet to release any public decision.
