Nigerian Afro-pop singer Yemi Alade has opened up about a period in her life when she slipped into depression after realizing she had been lying about her age for years.
In a recent chat with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the singer revealed that she once lost track of her real age because she kept giving the wrong number whenever she was asked.
“There was a time someone asked me my age, and I kept saying for three years I was 22. Then I realised I was 25 years old,” she recalled. “I took out my phone and I did the mathematics. I was depressed for a few days. My mind wasn’t taken into process. It was mental, for three years I didn’t know my right age.”
Yemi explained that the discovery left her emotionally shaken and forced her to confront how easily people can lose themselves while trying to fit into certain societal or entertainment industry standards.
Her openness sheds light on the mental health struggles that many entertainers face behind the scenes, often battling the pressure to maintain a youthful image in the spotlight.
