Benin’s National Assembly has approved a constitutional amendment extending the presidential term from five to seven years and creating an upper house of parliament.

The amendment preserves the two-term limit for presidents. Current President Patrice Talon is set to leave office in April 2026 after ten years in power, with his chosen successor, Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni, widely seen as the frontrunner for the upcoming election.

The amendment was passed with 90 votes in favour and 19 against. The newly established senate will consist of at least 25 members, including presidential appointees and ex-officio members such as former presidents.
