Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has expressed his willingness to take on a leadership role within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), but emphasized that he would only do so in a transparent, corruption-free environment.

The 37-year-old former international spoke in the wake of Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, noting that the challenges facing Nigerian football go beyond just results on the pitch.

Mikel, known for his unwavering commitment to the national team, said he is ready to contribute his experience and insight, but only under a system that values accountability.

He said:

“I have always fought for my country from my early days. Few players have given as much as I have, from the U17 and U20 teams to the senior national team. I have sacrificed years and never once refused my country.”

He added:

“When I know I can make a difference, I will always step up. But I will never allow corruption to be tied to my name. If progress is the goal, the right people must be in place—those who share the same vision—so that when players return home, they find an environment that allows them to perform at their best.”
