Arsenal’s 18-match unbeaten streak came to an end on Saturday as Emiliano Buendia’s stoppage-time goal handed Aston Villa a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Premier League leaders.
Matty Cash put Villa ahead in the first half, giving the hosts the perfect start at Villa Park. Arsenal responded after the break when Leandro Trossard came off the bench to level the score, raising hopes of extending their run.
However, sloppy defending in the dying moments allowed Buendia to strike, snatching a last-minute winner and plunging Arsenal into disappointment.
This defeat is Arsenal’s first in all competitions since a 1-0 loss to Liverpool on August 31, the only other blemish on their season so far.
Villa have become a consistent thorn in Arsenal’s side in recent years, taking crucial points at key moments in the title race. The win also highlighted the impact of former Arsenal manager Unai Emery, whose side have emerged as surprise title contenders, boasting seven successive victories in all competitions.
The result leaves Arsenal just three points clear of second-placed Villa, with third-placed Manchester City able to reduce the gap to two points if they defeat Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium later on Saturday.
