Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia South, has officially left the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The announcement comes after weeks of speculation about his political direction, fueled by growing tensions within APGA. Abaribe cited irreconcilable differences with the party’s leadership and strategic direction as the reason for his defection.
“After wide consultations, I have decided to formally resign from APGA and join the African Democratic Congress, which offers a clearer vision for good governance and national renewal,” he said, stressing the importance of a strong opposition to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative ahead of the 2027 general election.
Abaribe’s exit follows prolonged disputes within APGA over internal democracy, candidate selection, and perceived marginalization of key stakeholders. He had publicly criticized party leaders for making unilateral decisions and failing to foster consensus.
Insiders revealed that Abaribe was also dissatisfied with APGA’s handling of alliances and its engagement with the ruling party, which he felt undermined the party’s founding principles.
A former deputy governor of Abia State, Abaribe has been one of APGA’s most prominent and influential national figures.
