Court Threatens To Jail Sowore’s Lawyer
A Federal High Court in Abuja has warned Marshall Abubakar, lawyer to Omoyele Sowore, of possible jail time over alleged contempt during an ongoing cybercrime trial.
The warning came from presiding judge Mohammed Umar after a heated moment in court on Monday.
The case involves charges filed by the Department of State Services against Sowore over a social media post made on August 25, where he referred to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a “criminal” while reacting to comments on corruption during a trip to Brazil.
Tension rose when the defence sought time to file a no-case submission and requested an adjournment to July.
The prosecution opposed the move, arguing it was an attempt to delay proceedings, noting that the defence had already spent days cross-examining the only witness presented.
The situation escalated when Abubakar spoke loudly while Sowore also addressed the court.
The judge cautioned him and threatened contempt action if it happened again, but later stepped back after intervention from the prosecution. The matter was adjourned to April 13 for further proceedings.
