Detention Of Leaders Raises Tension In ADC
Fresh tension has gripped the African Democratic Congress following the detention of two of its leading figures, Abubakar Malami and Nasir El-Rufai.
Party members say the legal battles facing the former Attorney-General and the ex-Kaduna governor have unsettled supporters and slowed coalition talks ahead of 2027.
Malami is standing trial over alleged money laundering involving N8.7bn and faces additional charges linked to terrorism and firearms offences after separate arrests by security agencies.
El-Rufai, on his part, is being investigated by the EFCC and ICPC and is facing charges over alleged interception of the National Security Adviser’s phone communications. Both men deny wrongdoing.
Leaders within the ADC say the arrests have created fear among members and discouraged some politicians from openly aligning with the party.
The Kogi State chairman of the ADC, Kingsley Ogga, warned that keeping key figures away from political activity could weaken the party’s structure and affect preparations for future elections.
The ADC’s national spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, accused the Federal Government of mounting pressure on opposition voices, a claim officials of the ruling party have not formally addressed.
As court proceedings continue, the development has deepened political tension within the opposition camp.
