DSS Arrests Obi Shooting Incident Suspect
The Department of State Services has arrested 26-year-old Udeme Monday Stephen over an alleged attack and threat against Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Benin, Edo State.
The arrest followed a shooting incident on 24 February during a party meeting attended by Obi, former Edo State Governor John Odigie-Oyegun and members of the African Democratic Congress, where gunmen opened fire and the leaders escaped unharmed.
Soon after the incident, a post appeared on an X account linked to the suspect, claiming responsibility and warning of further violence.
In the message, he wrote, “We warned Obi against his entrance into Edo State, but he mistook our resolve for his Obidiots online noise. Thank his stars he (Obi) survived this one… I learnt he’s going to my Rivers State… Na my men go handle that one and dem no dey miss target… Speak no peace to a bastard and wish him no long life, for he’s destined to die.”
The suspect, said to be a teacher at Jessica High School in Eliozu, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, was later taken into custody.
