EFCC Gets Final Adjournment In Emefiele Fraud Trial
The trial of former Central Bank Governor Godwin Ifeanyi Emefiele continued on Tuesday at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja, where the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission secured a final adjournment to present its last witness.
Emefiele is facing an amended 20-count charge bordering on criminal breach of trust, forgery, abuse of office, and obtaining money by false pretence during his time at the Central Bank of Nigeria.
One of the key allegations involves the alleged fraudulent handling of $6.23 million said to be meant for international election observers during the 2023 general elections.
At the hearing, prosecution counsel Abbas Mohammed told the court that efforts were ongoing to ensure the attendance of the final witness, investigator Eloho Edwin Okboziakpo, who is currently engaged in another legal matter and requires official clearance from police authorities to appear.
Despite opposition from the defence team, Justice Hamza Mu’azu granted the request, stressing the importance of the witness to the case. However, the judge made it clear that no further adjournments would be allowed.
The court fixed April 27 and 28, 2026, for continuation of the trial, when the prosecution is expected to conclude its case.
