FAAN Cashless Launch Causes Airport Issues
Motorists and travellers faced delays at Lagos and Abuja airports as the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) launched its nationwide Go Cashless programme.
Traffic congestion occurred at Murtala Muhammed International Airport and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on the first day of the initiative.
FAAN explained that the gridlock was caused by many drivers trying to register for Go-Cashless cards at toll lanes, despite prior notices encouraging registration at designated offices.
The authority said temporary delays are expected during the early stages of such major system changes.
To ease the situation, FAAN deployed additional staff, increased registration points, and improved on-ground coordination.
The Go Cashless initiative, in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s push for digital payments, bans cash transactions at access gates, car parks, and executive lounges.
The programme, piloted since late 2025 in Lagos and Abuja with Paystack, aims to speed up processing, enhance transparency, and reduce cash-related risks.
FAAN advised motorists to obtain cards in advance and assured ongoing adjustments will make operations smoother in the coming days.
