FCT Residents Lament Rising Transport Fares
Residents of the Federal Capital Territory have raised concerns over rising transport fares following the recent increase in the pump price of Petrol across the country.
According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria, petrol which previously sold between ₦835 and ₦875 in the territory now costs between ₦1,200 and ₦1,350 per litre.
The sharp rise has pushed transport fares up by nearly 100 percent on some routes, leaving many commuters worried about the growing cost of living.
Some residents who spoke on the development said commercial transport operators had already adjusted fares upward.
A civil servant in Garki, Ngozi Okeke, said the fare from Nyanya to the city centre had increased within days of the fuel price change.
Commercial drivers said they had little choice but to raise fares to keep their businesses running, explaining that the price of petrol had continued to climb.
He advised the government to strengthen social support programmes and invest in improved mass transit systems to cushion the impact on residents.
