The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved new and reviewed road projects valued at more than N400 billion to boost Nigeria’s road network and improve national infrastructure.

Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, revealed this on Thursday while briefing State House correspondents after the FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Umahi said he presented 11 memos to the Council—nine for reviews of ongoing projects inherited from previous administrations and two for new contract awards.

According to him, the FEC approved the award of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway Phase Two, Section Two, valued at N43 billion, to address failed portions and complete underpasses and ramps.

He added that the Mushin–NNPC Junction–Papa Oshodi Expressway dualisation project was reviewed from N11 billion to N19 billion due to cost variations.

The minister further disclosed that the Council approved the construction of Section Three of the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway, spanning 162.97 kilometres from Badagry through Ogun to the Oyo State border, at N3.39 billion per kilometre.

Umahi also stated that several inherited projects were reviewed for funding and design improvements, including the Ilorin–Omu Aran–Egba road and the old Enugu–Onitsha road.

He explained that the 216-kilometre Ilorin–Omu Aran–Egba project would be executed in phases, with 31 kilometres to be covered in Phase One at a cost of N43 billion, while the remaining sections would follow when funding improves.

Additionally, the East–West Road was redesigned to enhance traffic flow and strengthen pavement structure, maintaining its N156 billion allocation for dual carriageways and bridges.

Umahi announced that several state governments had taken over federal road projects within their boundaries to ease financial pressure and accelerate completion.

He further disclosed that the Ota–Idi-Iroko road project in Ogun State was reviewed from N38 billion to N52 billion after the inclusion of rigid concrete pavement and an additional bridge.

Other approvals include the rehabilitation of the Jos–Turunkun–Maraban–Jama’a road in Kaduna State for N30 billion and the reconstruction of the Ijebu–Ibu Ete–Egba–Owena road, cutting across Ogun and Ondo States, for N53 billion.

Reaffirming the Tinubu administration’s focus on durable and cost-efficient infrastructure, Umahi stated, “Our focus remains delivering durable road infrastructure to support economic growth and ease of movement across the federation.”
