FG Clears Air On Mandatory Military Draft
The Federal Government has ruled out any move to compel Nigerian youths into military service. Defence Minister, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), made this clear while addressing concerns over reports suggesting a possible draft.
He said there is no policy or proposal before the government to enforce compulsory enlistment. According to him, the Armed Forces remain a professional body built on voluntary service, not forced recruitment.
The clarification comes amid growing public debate about youth involvement in national defence.
Musa explained that while young people are encouraged to contribute to nation-building, there is no plan to make military service mandatory.
He added that the focus remains on strengthening existing security structures and promoting voluntary participation, assuring Nigerians that any major policy shift would be openly discussed and properly communicated.
