The Federal Government has ordered the immediate closure of a mining site in Plateau State following reports that several villagers died after inhaling toxic gases while carrying out artisanal mining activities.

The tragedy has renewed concerns over the dangers linked to abandoned mineral sites and unregulated mining operations across the country.

Residents were said to have entered the site in search of mineral deposits when they were exposed to harmful fumes, leading to multiple fatalities.

Authorities say investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the incident and to assess safety conditions at the location.

Officials also warned against illegal and informal mining, stressing that such activities often expose communities to serious environmental and health risks.

The closure is part of efforts to prevent further casualties and to enforce stricter compliance with mining regulations.
