The Flamingos endured a disappointing start to their FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup campaign in Morocco, suffering a 4-1 defeat to Canada in their opening Group D clash.
The match, played at the Football Academy Mohammed VI in Salé near Rabat, saw the Canadians take an early lead just two minutes after kickoff when Molly Hale’s run from the left set up Gabriela Istocki for a calm finish.
Nigeria responded strongly, battling for control in midfield and creating several chances. Captain Shakirat Moshood came close twice — first with a long-range effort that was saved by goalkeeper Khadijah Cisse, and later with a volley that flew narrowly over the bar.
The Flamingos’ persistence paid off in the 30th minute when Queen Joseph tapped in from close range after Cisse failed to hold onto a shot from Kaosarat Olanrewaju, leveling the score at 1-1.
However, the Canadians regained dominance in the second half. Substitute Melisa Kekic restored their lead in the 73rd minute after breaking through Nigeria’s defense and slotting past goalkeeper Elizabeth Boniface.
A costly error from Boniface in the 80th minute allowed substitute Julia Amireh to make it 3-1, and six minutes later, Amireh sealed her brace with a composed finish to the far corner, completing Canada’s 4-1 victory.
Nigeria will look to bounce back when they face France in their second group game on Wednesday evening.
