Daniel Israel Mincey, a 20-year-old football player at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, has been charged with attempted murder and first-degree assault after allegedly stabbing two teammates just hours before a scheduled game.
Mincey, who is from Pompano Beach, Florida, was arrested on Saturday morning by campus police and taken to Jefferson County Jail, where he is being held with bail set at $90,000.
According to court filings, Mincey is accused of attempting to intentionally kill teammate Jasire Peterson and of inflicting serious injuries on another teammate, Joshua Underwood, using a knife.
A lawyer representing Mincey’s family, David Bigney, said it is too early for any detailed comment, explaining that the evidence is still being assessed.
The incident reportedly occurred inside UAB’s Football Operations Building on Saturday morning.
Both injured players were taken to the hospital and have now been discharged and are recovering, according to interim head coach Alex Mortensen.
“I’ve had the opportunity to sit with our injured players and their family, and they are okay with me telling you that they have left the hospital and are recovering,” he said.
Mincey, who moved to UAB from the University of Kentucky in May, has since been removed from the team’s online roster.
Mortensen explained that the team proceeded with its scheduled match against the University of South Florida so that senior players could take part in their final game. He also commended the team for managing through the distressing situation, while noting that some players chose not to participate.
