Viktor Gyökeres delivered double fire as Arsenal began with an emphatic second victory at the Emirates, thrashing Leeds with four goals to extend their strong start to the campaign.
Arsenal took the lead with yet another set piece with a delivery that came from a corner kick struck by Declan Rice, which allowed Jurrien Timber to drift behind Zubimendi before breaking and glancing a strong header into the far corner of the post.
The second half saw the Gunners press home their dominance. Gyökeres broke clear of the Leeds defence to lash home his first goal in Arsenal colours, silencing online haters on how he will adapt to the league, sparking huge celebrations inside the Emirates.
Jurrien Timber then struck again from close range following another corner routine, making it 4-0 with Leeds unable to cope with Arsenal’s set-piece threat.
The evening was capped off in stoppage time when 15-year-old debutant Max Dowman dazzled the crowd after showing what he could produce during preseason, winning a penalty after weaving past the Leeds backline.
Gyökeres stepped up to convert from the spot, sealing his brace and completing a 5-0 rout.
Latest signing Eberechi Eze was unveiled and received a warm welcome from fans in the stands after completing his transfer from Crystal Palace on a deal worth around £60 million to play as the club’s new number 10 and return to his boyhood club.
The evening carried a slight shadow for Arsenal, with both Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard forced off despite the big win.
Ødegaard sustained a shoulder injury and was substituted, as Arteta decided not to risk his captain, while Saka later went down near the Leeds box, leaving the Gunners worried they might also lose their winger.
