IGP Orders Probe Into Enugu Monarch
In Enugu State, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a full investigation into allegations against a traditional ruler in Ogugu, Awgu Local Government Area.
The move followed a petition sent to police authorities by retired Colonel Charles C. Egbo.
The petition accused Mr Aloysius Chidozie Ogbonna of making false claims, impersonation and hiding an alleged past criminal conviction in South Africa.
Police headquarters in Abuja directed the Force Criminal Investigation Department to handle the case through its Enugu office.
According to the petition, Ogbonna allegedly served a seven-year jail term abroad over drug offences and was not qualified under the community’s constitution to contest the Igweship stool.
It also claimed he held a coronation in January 2025 without securing the required Certificate of Recognition and Staff of Office from the Enugu State Governor.
Attention has also turned to a Certificate of Recognition he reportedly presented in April 2025, which petitioners described as a “blank sheet certificate” without proper authorisation.
While the Enugu State Ministry of Chieftaincy Matters insists the document is genuine, police are now expected to determine the facts as residents await the outcome of the probe.
