Kano Govenor Abba Yusuf told to Resign
The Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has declared that Governor Abba Yusuf is free to leave the party but must tender his resignation first.
The party’s state chairman, Senator Elmasud Doguwa, spoke on Tuesday during a press briefing in Kano, where he said the governor remains free to leave the NNPP but must first submit a formal resignation in line with party rules.
Doguwa said the party has no plan to force Yusuf to remain if he no longer wishes to continue on its platform. However, he stressed that the governor must officially notify the legally recognised NNPP in writing before joining another political party.
His comments come amid rising speculation that Yusuf, who won the 2023 governorship election on the NNPP platform, may be considering a move to the All Progressives Congress.
According to Doguwa, Yusuf is still a full member of the NNPP and is respected both as governor and as a party member. He added that while political affiliation is a personal choice, it must be handled in line with established rules and procedures.
The NNPP chairman warned that failure to resign properly could have implications in the future, especially given ongoing court cases over the party’s leadership.
He noted that several court judgments have already been delivered on the matter and said any defection without formal resignation could become an issue if the Supreme Court rules in the party’s favour.
Doguwa also insisted that the current NNPP leadership in Kano remains legitimate based on existing court decisions. He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to uphold and enforce the judgments delivered last year.
