Lagos Communities Threaten Protest To Ikeja Electric
Residents of Akesan and Obadore communities in Lagos have accused Ikeja Electric of neglecting their areas and failing to restore stable power supply, warning that continued outages may trigger protests.
The complaint was made by the Akesan-Obadore Joint Community Development Association in an open letter sent to the Oshodi Business District of the company.
Community leaders said residents have endured long periods of darkness despite earlier meetings where officials promised improvements.
According to the association, electricity supply in the area has worsened since the discussions held in February.
They said some households now experience blackouts lasting up to a week, while any available power often lasts only a few minutes or a few hours within an entire week.
The group also accused the company of failing to fulfil an agreement to install five electricity poles in the community.
Leaders warned that frustration is growing among residents, especially youths who are already calling for protests at the company’s headquarters.
Community representatives added that if the situation does not improve, they may report the matter to regulatory bodies including the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission and the Lagos State House of Assembly.
They also demanded an end to estimated billing, installation of prepaid meters and better electricity infrastructure in the area.
