The last remaining Labour Party member in the House of Representatives from Edo State, Hon Murphy Osaro Omoruyi, has defected to the African Democratic Congress.
Omoruyi, who represents the Egor/Ikpoba-Okha Federal Constituency, said his decision followed appeals from his constituents, who urged him to leave the Labour Party.
He explained that since his election into the National Assembly, he has remained committed to legislative duties and oversight functions, while consistently supporting the Labour Party. This, he said, earned him the description “The Last Man Standing”, reflecting his loyalty to the party.
However, he stated that the lingering internal crises within the Labour Party had made it impossible for him to remain in the party.
According to him, he joined the new coalition of the African Democratic Congress after formally resigning from the Labour Party in a letter submitted to his Ward Chairman in Ward 10, Egor Local Government Area, on 30 December 2025, which has since been accepted.
Omoruyi pledged full commitment to working with leaders and stakeholders in his new party to promote good governance and effective representation. He said the objective is to strengthen democratic institutions and ensure that the voices of ordinary Nigerians are respected.
He reassured his constituents of his loyalty, stating that the decision to defect was taken in their interest and in pursuit of a better future for the constituency.
He added that residents have been facing hardship, complaining about poor roads and difficult living conditions, which he blamed on the current government.
He said many constituents believe the government has failed to deliver on development despite the execution of the 2025 budget, and that he decided to align with their demand for political change.
