Makoko Activists Arrests Spark Fresh Outcry
The Lagos State Police Command has detained two community campaigners in Makoko as fresh demolition moves stir unrest in the waterfront area.
Caleb Dosungan and Simeon Iroko are being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Panti.
Their arrest was confirmed on Wednesday, drawing fresh attention to the long-running dispute.
Dosungan leads a local movement active in Makoko, Oko-Agbon, Sogunro and Iwaya, where residents have challenged earlier demolition drives in court.
In January, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reportedly met him to seek an out-of-court settlement over pending suits, including a Federal High Court ruling.
Community sources say no further steps followed that meeting.
Trouble resurfaced after reports of new demolition activity despite an earlier pause announced by the state government.
Residents claim some traditional leaders are backing the latest exercise. Tension rose sharply when a man was allegedly stabbed during the dispute.
The activists had gone to Adekunle Police Station to file a complaint over the stabbing before the matter was moved to SCID Panti, where they were detained.
Their lawyer has demanded their release within 24 hours, warning of legal action against the Lagos State Government and the Nigeria Police Force if they remain in custody.
