Market Opens Again In Anambra
On Monday, February 2, economic activity is set to return to Onitsha Main Market after the Anambra State Government lifted a one-week closure imposed to enforce compliance with state directives.
The move follows assurances that traders and residents can now operate freely without fear.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo ordered the shutdown after traders ignored the state’s instruction to conduct business on Mondays despite the sit-at-home tradition linked to IPOB.
The decision was taken during a visit to the market, where he cautioned that continued defiance could attract tougher action.
The closure later sparked tension after a factional IPOB statement announced a solidarity lockdown across the South-East.
However, the state government moved to calm nerves, saying the restriction had ended and that normal trading should resume without interruption.
Confirming the reopening, the state information commissioner said security had been strengthened across Anambra.
Residents were advised to go about their duties, while civil servants, teachers, and parents were reminded that work and school attendance on Mondays remain compulsory.
