Marriage Threat In Bauchi Poly Sparks Backlash
Federal Polytechnic Bauchi has barred male and female students from standing together in pairs during Ramadan, triggering fierce debate across the country.

The directive, dated February 25, 2026, was signed by the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Alhaji Kamisu Salihu.
The notice warned that any students who ignore the order could face an arranged Nikkah, an Islamic marriage, and would also be expected to organise their own Walima.
The circular stated that standing together as a boy and girl during the holy month is strictly forbidden and urged students to respect the institution’s sanctity.
The policy has drawn heavy criticism online, with many arguing that a federal institution should not impose religious rules in a secular setting.
Some commentators compared the move to extreme religious systems, while others said it threatens Nigeria’s multi-faith identity and called on the Federal Ministry of Education to step in.
The controversy has also fuelled wider debates about religion, governance and human rights in Nigeria.
Advocacy groups and social media users have linked the issue to ongoing concerns about religious freedom, urging authorities to review the directive amid growing public anger.
