President Bola Tinubu held talks with leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Tuesday night.
The meeting took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, apparently aimed at addressing concerns ahead of the labour union’s planned nationwide protest over worsening insecurity.
Those present at the meeting included senior government officials such as the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma; the Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo; the Governor of Kebbi State, Nasir Idris; and the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Honourable Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.
The labour delegation was led by the President of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero.
The closed-door engagement came barely a day before the NLC’s scheduled mass protest set for December 17.
No official statement has been issued on the outcome of the discussions, although indications suggest the talks were centred on preventing the planned protest and reaching a common understanding on pressing national issues.
The development follows the NLC’s earlier declaration in the week that there would be “no going back” on the protest, highlighting the urgency of addressing the grievances of Nigerians.
