Nigerian Bar Association Condemns FCT Judge Action
The Nigerian Bar Association has criticised an incident at the Federal High Court in Abuja where a judge reportedly asked a lawyer to kneel during proceedings.
The body described the action as unlawful and not recognised under Nigerian law.
In a statement, NBA president Afam Osigwe reacted to reports involving Justice Mohammed Umar and lawyer Marshall Abubakar, who was representing Omoyele Sowore.
The incident was said to have followed a disagreement over a hearing date, during which the lawyer allegedly raised his voice in court.
The association said the development raises concerns about the dignity of the legal profession and the conduct expected on the bench.
It noted that while judges have powers to maintain order, such authority must follow due process and established legal standards, adding that kneeling is not a recognised form of punishment.
The NBA also reminded lawyers to remain professional in court while urging all parties to handle disputes through proper channels.
It said it would engage relevant authorities if needed to ensure that judicial ethics and the rule of law are upheld.
