Nigerian Dental Technologists Rejects Amendment Bill
The Association of Dental Technologists of Nigeria has pushed back against a proposed amendment to the law guiding dental technologists, urging the National Assembly of Nigeria to stop further action.
The group said the bill could weaken how the profession is regulated across the country.
The controversy centres on changes to the Dental Technologists Registration Board of Nigeria, especially plans to cut down the number of practising technologists on the board.
The association warned that limiting professionals to just one member could affect proper decision-making in a highly technical field.
Concerns were also raised over the proposal to include more community representatives than professionals on the board.
While public input is important, the group believes expertise should remain at the centre of such a specialised body. It also questioned the lack of clear requirements for the board chairman.
The association further rejected any plan to include dental surgeons, pointing out that technologists have no seat in the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.
It called for a broader review of the system and urged lawmakers to consult widely before moving the bill forward.
