Nigerians Reactions To Fuel Market Dispute
Reactions have trailed an ongoing legal dispute between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) and Dangote Petroleum Refinery over fuel import licences and competition in the downstream sector.
The case has stirred public discussion on monopoly concerns and fuel supply in Nigeria.
NNPC, in court filings at the Federal High Court in Lagos, argued that limiting import licences as requested by Dangote Refinery could weaken competition and threaten fuel supply stability.
The dispute stems from a suit filed by Dangote Refinery against the Attorney-General of the Federation challenging import approvals given to other marketers.
The legal battle has drawn in the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, which has moved to join the case.
Meanwhile, Nigerians on social media continue to split in opinion, with some backing Dangote’s local production push while others defend the need for market competition.
On X, users traded arguments over fuel pricing, local refining capacity, and NNPC’s performance, with many calling for stronger domestic refining instead of continued imports.
The debate has added fresh attention to Nigeria’s long-standing fuel supply challenges and refinery issues.
